CIS SCHOOLS

VOLUNTEER SERVICES
Teachers often lack the help they need to provide a desirable range of educational and developmental opportunities. Schools, as a whole, lack the personnel and resources to adequately recruit, screen, train and supervise community volunteers and intern students.

DIVISION PURPOSES
By coordinating volunteer services, CIS can prepare people more effectively for service in schools, bring in high-caliber trainers, and match volunteer interests with a wide range of volunteer needs throughout the CIS network of schools.

THE CIS EDGE

Through the development of significant community partnerships as sources for volunteers, CIS is able to recruit and train hundreds of individuals for deployment into schools. These partnerships include AmeriCorps, VISTA, NCCC, the National Caucus on the Black Aged, and most area colleges and universities. CIS recruits, screens, trains, places, and supervises hundreds of volunteers every year. Their valuable efforts help children to learn and succeed, support the schools, and help CIS to expand its range of services.

VOLUNTEER EXEMPLARS

Volunteers help to provide all CIS services, including classroom assistance, after-school instruction, mentoring, tutoring, and computer education. They pick up and deliver donations, coordinate fundraising events, and serve on the Board of Directors. Volunteers truly are the heart of the movement to bring the community into schools to benefit students and families, and our children are succeeding due to their efforts!

DIVISION SUCCESSES
The best illustration of success are the words of this AmeriCorps volunteer, “It was a joy seeing the glow on students’ faces when they accomplished difficult tasks, or when impossible obstacles became like a walk in the park for them.” The kids, schools, and volunteers all benefit from the relationships. More than a thousand volunteers provide more than a million hours of service for 30,000 students every year.

VISION
To expand the volunteer hours provided to schools by 20% by 2006.
