INNOVATIVE
SCHOOLS
Students with academic, disciplinary and/or
attendance challenges are among the youth
at greatest risk for school failure and future
difficulty integrating into the workforce.
In addition, many alternative education programs
are plagued with a myriad of barriers to creating
an effective learning environment. For these
reasons, CIS established its Innovative Schools
Division and launched its first venture, the
Detroit Lion’s Academy, in 2000.
DIVISION PURPOSES
The Detroit Lions Academy is a CIS
partnership with the Detroit Lions, Costco
Wholesale, Dow Chemical’s “Dow
Promise”, Pepsi, Ford Motor Company,
City Year, and the Detroit Public Schools
that established and supports an innovative
learning center for some of Detroit's most
vulnerable students. The Academy is an example
of community partnerships at work to benefit
children. Detroit Lions work hand in hand
with AmeriCorps and City Year volunteers,
as well as staff from dozens of community
and faith based organizations to help students
overcome the obstacles that led to their academic
setbacks.
THE CIS EDGE
Because of its extensive experience working
with schools to address barriers to learning,
CIS is well positioned to impact the lives
of the students who are most at risk for school
failure. CIS partners provide a ready reservoir
of resources and services to benefit students.
Educators are freed from the demands of seeking
such supportive services and can concentrate
on teaching.
INNOVATIVE SCHOOLS EXEMPLARS
CIS partnerships with community organizations
have resulted in dramatic changes for students.
Dow Chemical Corporation’s “Dow
Promise” program adopted the science
lab of the Detroit Lions Academy, providing
high tech science equipment as well as chemists
and engineers who serve as science mentors
for students. Because of this investment,
students who previously were disinterested
in science now love it. They even look forward
to careers in the fields of science and technology.
DIVISION SUCCESSES
National CIS and Costco Wholesale have
facilitated collaborative sports academies
in several cities, including; San Francisco,
Seattle, Indianapolis, and Phoenix. The Detroit
Lions Academy is a highly respected national
model within that network, helping to redefine
the public education of our most vulnerable
youth. At the DLA, students who have not been
successful previously achieve tremendous accomplishments.
Improvements in academics, attendance, and
citizenship have been remarkable.
VISION
To expand the DLA Innovative School model
to additional academies in Detroit by 2006. FOR
