COMMUNITY
TECHNOLOGY CENTER
The digital divide is at its greatest size
in
African-American and Hispanic communities,
in economically disadvantaged neighborhoods,
and in single parent households. The CIS Community
Technology Center (CTC) helps to bridge the
technology gap among Detroit residents.
DIVISION PURPOSES
The goal of the CTC is to give participants
a competitive edge in employment, school success
and personal growth. The CTC is designed for
all ages. It offers formal classes for specific
programs, age groups, and schools, as well
as ‘open hours’ for individuals
and small businesses. Each of the four large
labs is equipped with state-of-the-art computers,
programs, digital cameras, and Internet access.
Users can create newsletters, websites, write
resumes, and develop posters, cards, and banners.
Classes are offered at the beginner and intermediate
levels, and even include computer repair.
For more information, see the current schedule
of classes. THE
CIS EDGE
Through the support of its extensive corporate
partners, CIS is able to leverage donated
computers, refurbish them, and offer them
to students and residents who have none. With
the investment of certified Information and
Technology experts and bilingual staff, CIS
brings cutting-edge technology to Detroit
residents.
HOURS
The CTC is open during convenient hours for
most people on Monday through Thursday and
on Saturdays. Residents wishing to use the
lab need only call to reserve a computer for
almost any time of the day or evening.
TECHNOLOGY EXEMPLARS
“At the CTC I learned how to find info
on the Internet, repair a computer and publish
my own newsletter with pictures I took. I
love the CTC!” This quote from a 15
year old student is an example of the success
and confidence youth and adults enjoy at the
CTC. Come join in the fun!
DIVISION SUCCESSES
The CTC has had many successes since its inception,
such as:
• The
CTC has employed high school students during
the summer months and school year
with the assistance of the Youth Sports
and Recreation Commission.
•
Hundreds of “most improved”
students and parent volunteer have received
free computers.
•
CTC participants from DPS high schools received
scholarships as a result of program participation.
VISION
To offer technology services to 300 more students
and adults each year, reaching out to more
and more small and emerging businesses and
youth in the community.
