COMPREHENSIVE
SCHOOL SERVICES
The largest Division of Communities In Schools
of Detroit (CIS), Comprehensive School Services,
coordinates a vast array of programs, services,
and learning incentives in schools.
DIVISION PURPOSES
The Comprehensive Schools Division of CIS
works with administrators, educators, and
parents to develop an individual school plan
that responds to the needs of students, their
families, and the surrounding community. Each
plan is unique to the individual school and
its community and can be as simple as the
coordination of a few services or as complex
as facilitation of a continuum of resources,
with a full time Project Director and community
partners at the school.
COMMUNITY PARTNERS
CIS has forged relationships with more than
850 organizations and businesses that are
committed to schools throughout Detroit and
Wayne County. These partners include leaders
in business, industry, sports, recreation,
counseling, faith-based institutions, and
the education community. THE
CIS EDGE
By contracting with a myriad of organizations,
with the financial and service support of
countless individuals and businesses, CIS
has the ‘buying’ power to facilitate
services throughout its partner schools that
would otherwise be cost-prohibitive. CIS of
Detroit has a decade of experience in finding
solutions for the challenges that schools
and families face daily. CIS brings its expertise
and resources to bear in helping each school
to meet its goals for student success. Further,
CIS frees administrators and educators from
the tasks of seeking the ‘extras’
that students and the community need, so that
they may better focus on teaching and administering
the school.
CONNECTION EXEMPLARS
Student
Behavior
Using the CIS model, one elementary school
reduced out of school suspensions from an
average of nine per month to one for the entire
school year. Personal attention and a range
of services were the key to success.
ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT
Science was a weakness on standardized tests
for Harms Elementary School. Through a concerted
effort with partners, CIS brought in intern
students, held a family math carnival, focused
on science at a special summer program, and
helped support a full time science instructor.
The next year science scores quadrupled!
PARENT INVOLVEMENT
At Nolan Middle School, CIS worked with the
administration and diverse community partners
to better publicize and add excitement to
the monthly Local School Community Organization
meeting. Attendance improved an average of
500%, with as many as 400 parents attending
a single event! DIVISION
SUCCESSES
One middle school principal stated, “CIS
has provided health screening, dental service
and a full range of community services that
have motivated our students. The results are
that our students' behavior has improved.
The school atmosphere has completely changed.” VISION
To broker at least $300,000 in community services,
support, and incentives at each school in
the CIS network. FOR
