AFTER
SCHOOL SERVICES
Services for children during the hours they
are at greatest risk for being unsupervised
or engaged in unhealthy activities are critical
to our children’s success. This fact
drove the decision to facilitate out-of-school
services for Detroit students. CIS provides
such services in schools throughout the City.
DIVISION PURPOSES
The After School Division of CIS partners
with community/faith-based organizations that
serve as lead agencies in the coordination
of a diverse array of activities for students
in school settings. Each school program is
created through a joint effort between CIS,
funders, school personnel, parents, and students,
and reflects their shared vision. The programs
offer a balanced array of homework help, fun
activities that augment academics, recreation,
creative arts, career exploration, and community
service learning. Specific ‘classes’
are as different in each school as the students
themselves.
LEAD
AGENCIES & VENDORS
The lead agencies range from art centers to
universities to youth-serving organizations.
Each has a special relationship with the school
and together with CIS seeks vendors that meet
the needs and interests of the school community.
The vendors may include in-line skating, swimming,
golf, Mente thinking games, robotics, bridge
building, computer rehab, sports, story-telling,
English as a Second Language, sculpture, rocket
construction, and much more.
THE CIS EDGE
By contracting with hundreds of vendors for
services to dozens of schools, CIS can offer
a rich and extensive range of opportunities
for students. Since CIS facilitates services
in many schools, funders are often more inclined
to support CIS than an individual school.
Non-cash donors of goods and tickets to sporting
events know that CIS can deploy those items
to tens of thousands of children throughout
the City quickly and effectively.
AFTER SCHOOL EXEMPLARS
Promising Practices in After-School Programs
(PPAS) of the Academy for Educational Development
(AED) recognized CIS for its practice regarding
community involvement in after-school programming.
Students are safe, engaged, building skills
and learning in diverse ways from a variety
of people. Parents support after school programs
because, “it keeps our kids safe, and
provides additional academic and recreational
support.” Administrators and teachers
agree that students who participate in after
school activities attend school more regularly
and are less likely to skip.
DIVISION SUCCESSES
The After School Division facilitates programs
valued in excess of $3 million in schools
in Detroit, Ecorse and River Rouge. CIS has
more than 100 community vendors providing
thousands of hours of activities for children
and families during the non-school hours.
Funding to support the after school programs
is provided by private and public sector partnerships
with governmental entities, corporations,
and individual donors.
VISION
To expand after-school services into 50 schools
by the year 2006. FOR
